Lecturer: MJ Kinman

Title:  "Gems and Joys"

Website:  https://mjkinman.com

Description:

Over the course of a single day-long session, students will learn how to: • Learn about the codes and visual clues I use to help me piece a gem together. • Learn about the dazzling variety of colored gemstones so that they can select the colors for their gem that bring them joy. (Hint: there are no wrong answers!) • Understand how different types of fabrics impact the flow of light and color across a quilt design. • Assemble the fabric facets to create their own 18”-square block.
PDF patterns (provided by instructor) printed onto 8.5” x 11” sheets of freezer paper (either self-made or commercially available from C&T Publishing. If self-made, either white or brown freezer paper are suitable.)MJ likes to say she makes the biggest diamonds in the world. But instead of using the hardest substances in the world, she uses the softest – fabric. She describes the techniques she uses to create her giant gem portraits as traditional piecing using freezer paper for templates. Website: www.mjkinman.com
MJ’s work has been exhibited in national competitions, galleries, and museums, including the National Quilt Museum and the International Quilt Museum. Her work is included in private and public collections, including Maker’s Mark Distillery and the National Quilt Museum. Lecturer: Linda Ballad

Title: "What if I..."

Website: https://www.letsquilt.com

Description:

“What if I ....” Are you one who follows the rules? Do you change out your fabric values, play with the components or create different borders? We’ll explore how subtle changes can give you an entirely new quilt. You'll see a whole new world after this program. The program consists of a short power point section along with quilts that only reinforces the 'What If I" ...

Linda Ballard has been an avid sewer all her life, Linda has taken her skills from dressmaking to creating wonderful traditional quilts using today’s faster techniques and tools. She believes there’s always something for everyone when it comes to quilting, and that quilters have a strong bond unlike anything else.

She lives in northern CA outside Redding in a country community called Palo Cedro. Linda was a quilt shop owner in Redding and now travels throughout the country teaching both on land and sea.

Linda is known for her quilting retreats, her teachings and has been featured in a variety of quilting magazines with her quilts, her patterns and as ‘ad’ quilts for a specific line of fabrics. Linda will tell you constantly ‘to be flexible and go with the possibilities that are presented’.  She always finishes with one simple word …

August 17, 2022  - TBD "Presidents Choice"

Lecturer:  Margaret Fabrizo

Title:

Website: http://www.margaretfabrizio.com/

Description:

I studied quilt making with Grace Earl, designer at the Chicago Art Institute, and my prize-winning quilts have been exhibited in Northern California, and at New Pieces Gallery in Berkeley, where I also played a forte-piano concert.

My bother, my grandmother and my sister have all made quilts.  Although I have always sewn, I came to quilting only in the last ten years when I began making quilts for myself and my family.  Each piece is machine pieced and hand quilted.  Most have their origin in traditional design but develop organically, influenced very much by the personality of the recipient.  I start and finish a queen size quilt in six to twelve weeks, working night and day.  The process takes over my life until the last stitch is taken.  I find quilting not unlike music.  I am completely caught up in the initial concept, mesmerized by color and texture, absorbed by the rhythm of the repeating patterns.
